City Churches, Dundee - Ref: WC1407
This tranquil loooking photograph shows the centrally located City Churches. Today the scene is far more frenetic as the churches are situated in the centre of a recently refurbished shopping complex, known as the Overgate Centre. (2001)
The City Churches and Old Steeple have already witnessed many changes in their long often turbulent history, however. In 1841 a devastating fire, though not the first to devastate a church on the site, destroyed the churches, fortunately the Old Steeple survived unscathed. They were rebuilt as they appear today.
Alexander Wilson, who took this photograph, was a supervisor in a Dundee jute mill for over 20 years. He bequeathed much of his collection and £50, to cover the costs involved, to the Free Library Committee of Dundee in 1923.
