Dupplin Castle - Ref: WC2491

Dupplin Castle

The Dupplin estate is to the south west of Perth. It was acquired by the Hay family as Earl of Kinnoull in 1623. Alexander Wilson's photograph shows the third castle built on the site. The design, by William Burn, cost around £30, 000 to realise.

The previous building was destroyed by a fire in 1827, but the library of valuable first editions of classics and the collection of paintings were saved. Building work on the replacement took four years to 1832. Victoria and Albert visited in September 1842.

The estate was acquired by Sir John Alexander Dewar, the whisky tycoon, in 1911. He was ennobled as Baron Forteviot of Dupplin in 1916. The castle was seriously damaged by fire in 1934. The replacement (1970) used some of the surviving foundations.
