Dupplin Castle - Ref: WC2492
Dupplin Castle stood to the south west of Perth on a estate which had belonged to the Hay family since Charles I's Lord Chancellor was granted it as Earl of Kinnoull. The building shown in this Alexander Wilson photograph was the third Dupplin Castle.
Designed by William Burn, it was built (at a cost of about £30, 000) in 1828-32, following the destruction by fire of the previous castle in 1827, although the valuable library and art collections were rescued. Victoria and Albert visited in September 1842.
The estate was also the site, on 12th August 1332, of the Battle of Dupplin. Edward Baliol and his vastly inferior numbers of soldiers, surprised and routed Mar, the new Scottish Regent. He and 13, 000 of his followers were killed.
