Consumer Product Testing

At Tayside Scientific Services we provide a range of analyses for testing consumer products submitted by local Trading Standards departments. These products are tested for compliance with national regulations, with quality, safety and/or labelling assessed.
Products received at the laboratory for safety assessment and testing include:
- Toys
- Cosmetics
- Fuels
- Candles
- Household Chemicals
Toys may be assessed for their physical and mechanical properties in accordance with the relevant British Standards.
Testing and analysis can identify unsafe physical construction (sharp edges, points etc), dangerous toxic content (e.g. heavy metals in paint), and high flammability.
Cosmetics may be examined for preservatives and/or heavy metals content and labelling compliance.
Fuel quality may be examined in light of consumer complaints, frequently regarding contamination of petrol with diesel and vice versa.
Candles may be examined for fire safety, sooting behaviour and product safety labelling in accordance with the relevant British Standards.
Household chemicals may be analysed for compliance with the Chemicals (Hazard Information and Packaging for Supply) Regulations (also known as CHIP). These regulations aim to protect the public from the hazards of chemicals. Samples submitted to the laboratory are analysed to make sure the information and warnings provided on the label are correct.
