Food

The public are protected from unsafe and contaminated food by enforcement of the Food Safety Act 1990.
This Act requires that all food authorities must appoint a Public Analyst and have their testing carried out in an Official Food Control Laboratory. Tayside Scientific Services provides this statutory service to their local authority clients.
We ensure that food is fit for human consumption, accurately described, free from harmful colourants, toxins, heavy metals, undesirable substances, and is of the quality demanded by the consumer. Testing can be carried out to determine the presence of allergens, such as peanut residues, gluten, milk, and sulphites to protect the health of those people who are allergic to those ingredients. We can check that food is free from spoilage including rancidity, protein breakdown and bacterial growth.
We assist our authorities in carrying out targeted projects investigating the nutritional content of food including take-away meals , and pre-packed foods. We can provide a full nutritional analysis including fat, saturated fat, protein, carbohydrate, energy value and salt content.
All of the analytical data and interpretation of results are fed into the Food Surveillance System database (UKFSS). This is a national database funded by The Food Standards Agency that centrally holds a record of all food samples submitted for testing by Official Control laboratories.
