Microbiology
Information/Service?
At Tayside Scientific Services we provide a comprehensive range of microbiological tests to monitor the quality and safety of food, drinking water, bathing and recreational waters to determine whether regulations and guidelines are being satisfied. The laboratory is accredited by UKAS to ISO 17025 and DWTS standards for the examination of water.
The microbiology section carries out testing of a wide range of foods and environmental swab samples. These are generally submitted in the course of routine sampling programmes by Environmental Health Officers under the provisions of the Food Safety Act to help ensure that the numbers and types of bacteria associated with a food or premise are not likely to cause a threat to public health.
Raw, drinking and recreational waters are tested to ensure that there are no risks of contamination or deterioration of sanitary conditions. Schools, parks and local swimming pools are routinely monitored.
The laboratory also carries out a range of microbiological tests on milks and dairy products, working with local Environmental Health Departments and private companies to ensure that the products are fit for human consumption.
Work carried out in the microbiological section provides essential support in, for example, the investigation of outbreaks of food poisoning or Legionnaires` disease.
In addition to in-house quality testing, the laboratory participates in several external quality assurance schemes to ensure we maintain our high standard of examination.
The tests are tailored to suit the customer's requirements and consultation is a priority at all stages with interpretative advice always available.
