Dundee City Council Leisure and Communities Department’s Sports Development Section, has teamed together with SportDunee formerly (Dundee City Sports Council) to present the 9th SportDundee Awards.


This award ceremony is held to formally recognise and reward the success, commitment and dedication of athletes, clubs, coaches, teams, officials and volunteers within Dundee .

The 2009 SportDundee Awards will be held on Wednesday 25 November 2009 at the Invercarse Hotel. The purpose of the Awards evening is to celebrate and honour the achievements and efforts of volunteers, coaches, officials, teams and individual athletes involved in local sport.

Nominations for each of the awards are invited from individuals or organisations that know a person, team or club whom they feel deserves recognition for their achievements during 2009. Three finalist nominations from each category will be pre-selected and invited to attend the Awards Ceremony, where the winners will be announced.

SportDundee Awards Winners 2008

If you are unsure if your nomination is suitable, have a look at the information below on last year's winners to see their achievements:

Coach of the Year - Beate Petersen (Gymnastics)
Beate Petersen is head coach of Dundee Gymnastics Club 2K.  3 of Beate's gymnasts were selected again for the National Youth Squad and 6 in the regional squad.  The team retained the Scottish Championships title and Jordan Archibald was crowned Espoir overall Champion.  Beate travelled with Jordan and Kirsty Campbell to the British Championships and their performances saw them selected for the Commonwealth Games squad and Northern European Championships.  Beate has sacrificed a lot in her personal life to be able to dedicate around 30 hours a week to her coaching.

Community Coach of the Year - Pam Bowie (Gymnastics)
Pam Bowie has not only coached within 3 local clubs and the Dundee Development Squad but she has mentored 20 coaches within Newfields & WAC Gymnastics Clubs. She has made a huge difference to the sport in Dundee and to the individuals themselves, 16 of whom have now been employed as sessional coaches by Dundee City Council.  Pam has attended Tutor and Assessor Training enabling more coach education courses to be held locally.  In addition, Pam has become a qualified judge meaning that many more of her weekends will be filled with attending competitions.

Official of the Year - Anne McRae (Hockey)
Anne McRae, 3 times winner of this award, has achieved an enormous amount at the very top of her sport. Anne umpired at no less than 7 international events across the world in the last year.  At 2 events, the Euro Hockey Nations Championships and European Indoor Club Championships, her performances led to her being selected to umpire the final.  The pinnacle of her career came with selection for the Olympics in Beijing, a top achievement for officials as well as athletes.  Anne has proven that she is a world class official.

Lifetime Commitment - Jim McIlravey (Football)
Jim McIlravey has been President of Dundee United Sports Club for 25 years and has been instrumental in developing the club into one of the biggest sports clubs in Dundee, providing opportunities for all age-groups.  Jim's roles include administrator, coach and selector.  Jim is also Secretary of Dundee & District Youth Football Association and he sits on the Executive Committee.  These commitments plus his position as Vice Chairman of Clubs for Young People Tayside sees Jim busy 5 nights a week.  Thanks to Jim's dedication and commitment thousands of boys and girls have participated in football in Dundee.

Young Volunteer of the Year - Gavin Cruickshanks (Hockey)
Gavin Cruickshanks demonstrated he is a fantastic volunteer with a desire to help others.  Gavin has taken on a number of volunteering roles for Menzieshill Hockey Club.  He is responsible for the club's development work with schools, he coordinated volunteers at the European Indoor Hockey Championships his club hosted and he also found time to complete coaching and officiating qualifications so he can assist with these aspects of the club.  Gavin has coached Midlands Under 14 and Under 15 squads and has still found time to captain Grove Academy's team and play for Menzieshill Hockey Club's 2nd team.

Volunteer of the Year - Robin Paterson (Basketball)
Robin Paterson, the Basketball Scotland 'Volunteer of the Year 2008', is heavily involved in the sport locally and regionally.  He is Chairman of Basketball Tayside & Fife, he is the driving force behind Madsons Basketball Club, he links with other clubs in relation to pathways and partnership working and he is a member of numerous other committees within his local community.  His roles within basketball range from head coach, mentor, administrator and organiser.  Robin has also had a positive influence on local basketball through his various committee positions.  Examples of this are securing funding for new equipment and attracting the British Masters competition to Dundee.

Young Team of the Year - Dundee Gymnastics Club 2K
Dundee Gymnastics Club 2K team retained the Scottish Gymnastics Team Championship Trophy making it 2 wins in the last 2 years at the event.  The team members - Katie Guild, Hannah Kilcullen and Tayside & Fife Institute of Sport athletes Jordan Archibald and Kirsty Campbell all performed fantastically to win the overall event, with 3 of the girls securing individual medals and Jordan being crowned overall champion.  Other successes in the last year for the team have included qualification for the British Championships and individual selections for Scottish squads competing at the Celtic Cup and the UK School Games.

Team of the Year - Bonagrass Grove Ladies Hockey Club 1st XI
The team was extremely successful year in both indoor and outdoor competition.  They won the National Indoor Division 1 title, qualifying for next year's European competition and in outdoor competition, the team retained their National Division 1 Outdoor title, again qualifying for Europe.  6 members of the team received call-ups to the full Scotland squad and 2 call-ups to the Under 21 squad.  2 players were also involved in the Great Britain squad in the lead up to the Olympics in Beijing. 

Club of the Year - Club of the Year - Dundee United Sports Club (Football)
Dundee United Sports Club, one of the biggest clubs in Dundee, celebrated its 25th anniversary.  The club currently has 13 football teams for all ages, male and female, and offers members opportunities to participate competitively in other activities.  The achievements included teams winning 2 leagues, 6 cups, 15 players capped for Scotland, 4 5-a-side winners, 3 cross country champions, 2 golf champions, 2 pool champions and 2 teams travelling abroad for competitions.  As well as all this success and activity, the club has completed the first levels of the SFA Quality Mark and ClubDundee programmes and has invested heavily in coaches and volunteers.

Jenny Wood Allen Award - Andrew Gray (Swimming)
Andrew Gray is a member of Discovery Swimming Club for swimmers with a disability.  He has represented the club, Tayside, Scotland and Great Britain as part of Special Olympics Teams.  Andrew reached the very top of his swimming career when he was selected as part of the Great Britain Team for the World Summer Games in Shanghai.  He excelled himself by winning gold in the 25m butterfly and also competed in 3 other events.  Andrew is a great ambassador for his sport and Dundee.  He has become a global messenger for the Special Olympics by promoting sport and sharing his experiences at conferences. 

Young Sportsperson of the Year - Jordan Archibald (Gymnastics)
Jordan Archibald has proven that she is one of the top gymnasts in Britain.  Her achievements include being crowned overall Scottish Champion, Scottish Beam Champion and Scottish Asymmetrical Bar Champion.  Jordan also became Challenge Cup Champion, the event for British Championships qualification.  At the British Championships, Tayside & Fife Institute of Sport athlete Jordan was a finalist on the vault.  Her performances saw her selected to represent Scotland at the Celtic Cup, where the team won bronze, and the forthcoming Northern Europeans and the Commonwealth Games training squad.  Her commitment to a 24 hour per week training programme and her ability to overcome her fears to perform new skills means Jordan has a bright future.

Sportsperson of the Year - Becky Ward (Hockey)
Although only 19, Becky Ward has been a member of Dundee Wanderers Hockey Club for 12 years and has become an important player for her club and country during this time.  Becky, who is supported by Tayside & Fife Institute of Sport, graduated from the Scotland Under 18 squad to the senior squad for both indoor and outdoor.  Her performances in the European Indoor Championships, Celtic Cup and European Outdoor Championships saw her named Scotland Under 21 Player of the Year and selected for trials for the Junior Olympics in Australia.  As well as international achievements, Becky also played throughout the season for Dundee Wanderers demonstrating her commitment to her sport.

bullet University of Abertay Dundee team of the year - Presented to a local Dundee team who have achieved success at the highest level within their sport whether at a local, national or international level
bullet Redwood Leisure Ltd. sports person of the year - Awarded to an individual who has achieved outstanding results during the past 12 months in their chosen

lifetime commitment award - Presented to a dedicated individual who has given a lifetime's commitment to sport. This could include time as an athlete, volunteer, administrator or official. Consideration will be given to special circumstances or hurdles that have been overcome in order to maintain the commitment to their sport and this should be detailed as part of the nomination. The nomination should reflect the hard work and dedication the nominee has given and the impact this has had on sport and those involved

bullet coach of the year - Presented to a coach who has throughout the past 12 months, demonstrated an outstanding level of commitment to his or her sport. It should be demonstrated within the nomination the level of the nominee's commitment to coaching athletes or teams within Dundee including time commitment
bullet Radio Tay Cash for Kids young sports person of the year - Presented to a talented young person under 18 years of age who has excelled in his or her chosen sport over the past 12 months
bullet jenny wood allen award - Presented to an individual with a physical, sensory and or Learning disability in recognition of their commitment and achievements over the past 12 months
bullet volunteer of the year - Presented to an individual who has shown an outstanding commitment as a volunteer to their chosen sport throughout the past 12 months
bullet Dundee City Sports Council young team of the year - Awarded to a young team that has been successful in local, national or international competitions throughout the last 12 months
community coach of the year - This award is about a local contribution to sport and will be presented to the coach who has demonstrated commitment and dedication to coaching within a community group, school or with a group of athletes throughout the last 12 months
official of the year - Presented to an individual who has given their time throughout the past 12 months to officiate within their chosen sport, whether at recreational, school, district or national events. This nominee will be either starting out on the qualification pathway or a fully qualified official
Evening Telegraph club of the year - Awarded to a club that has achieved collectively or through individual achievements of their members and should demonstrate how the club has developed over the past 12 months
young Volunteer of the year - Awarded to an individual who has shown an outstanding commitment as a volunteer to their chosen sport over the past 12 months
