Towards a Sustainable Future

Dundee City Council is committed to working in partnership to ensure:

  • Diversity and local distinctiveness are valued and protected
  • Settlements are 'human' in scale and form
  • Places, spaces and objects combine meaning and beauty with utility
  • Opportunities for culture, leisure and recreation are readily available to all
  • All sections of the community are empowered to participate in decision-making
  • Access is given to the skills, knowledge and information needed to enable everyone to play a full part in society
  • People live without fear of personal violence from crime or persecution because of their personal beliefs, race, gender or sexuality
  • Health is protected by creating safe, clean, pleasant environments and health services which emphasise prevention of illness as well as care for the sick
  • Access to facilities, services, goods and people is not achieved at the expense of the environment and is available to all
  • People have the opportunity to undertake satisfying work in a diverse economy. The value of unpaid work is recognised, whilst payments for work are fair and fairly distributed
  • Access to good food, water, shelter and fuel is available at a reasonable cost
  • Local needs are met locally
  • The diversity of nature is valued and protected
  • Pollution is limited to levels with which natural systems can cope
  • Resources are used efficiently and waste is minimised

The City Council will apply the following principles in pursuing the fifteen key themes:

POLICY integration across all sectors, taking account of all environmental consequences of organisational and service activities.

PROTECTION of the environment, striving to live within sustainable environmental limits by using resources efficiently.

PARTICIPATION in the decision-making process by individuals and organisations in bringing about sustainable activity.

PARTNERSHIPS between groups, organisations and the local community will be crucial in achieving environmental sustainability.

Declaration of Commitment

Dundee City Council is committed to developing a Local Agenda 21, entitled DUNDEE 21. The information given on this web page is a part of the process and serves an as introduction to how the Council thinks it should continue - a statement of intent.

Dundee City Council, through its corporate plan and Dundee 21, as well as other plans and strategies, wants to improve the quality of life for all its citizens, particularly those in vulnerable sectors of the community. However, these improvements to our quality of life should not affect the ability of future generations to enjoy a healthy, safe and secure environment.

Dundee City Council is committed to sustaining, protecting, conserving and enhancing the environment through its policies and activities and through partnership with others to ensure the city is clean, healthy, prosperous and safe for the benefit of all who live in, visit and work in Dundee.

John Letford
Lord Provost of Dundee

Local Agenda 21

In 1992, the United Nations held a Conference on Environment and Development, known as the Earth Summit. Agenda 21, a programme for action to be taken from now into the twenty-first century, was adopted by more than 170 governments.

Agenda 21 recognises the interdependence of environmental, social, health and economic issues.

  • Section One emphasises that all people have the right to food, health care, shelter and education.
  • Section Two covers a wide range of environmental issues, where safeguarding the environment is a key feature.
  • Section Three addresses the specific roles of 'major groups' in sustainable development and emphasises the need for these groups to be involved in the decision-making process.
  • Section Four looks at the means and implementation of Agenda 21.

Chapter 28 calls upon each Local Authority to undertake a consultative process with its citizens and develop a Local Agenda 21. Each Local Authority should ensure that the principle of sustainability is incorporated into all aspects of its work. To achieve this, Local Authorities and their communities now need to develop structures through which they can work together towards a sustainable society.

Dundee's Corporate Plan

The Corporate Plan sets out the City Council's vision for the city's future, and explains how we will work towards turning that vision into reality.

The Plan recognises that Dundee's strengths lie in its quality of life and quality of environment. It is the intention of the City Council to build on these strengths for the benefit of all its citizens.

Dundee 21 will augment the references throughout the Plan to sustainability and Local Agenda 21, and incorporate them into a coherent and realistic strategy for sustainable development. A key feature of the strategy will be the active and informed involvement of Dundee's citizens.

Sustainability

Sustainability aims to improve the quality of life for everyone, without placing strains on the environment that make it difficult for future generations and the vulnerable sections of today's generations to live.

Sustainable Development

Sustainable development brings together four sets of values - environmental protection, providing for the future, quality of life and fairness - to create a new policy agenda that integrates environmental, developmental, social and economic concerns.
