Changes to Council Tax Benefit

The UK Government is abolishing Council Tax Benefit from April 2013. It will be replaced by a new Council Tax Reduction which will be managed by local councils.

The Scottish Government has indicated that the new scheme will be similar to the Council Tax Benefit scheme for the first year at least.  As a result, people in receipt of Council Tax Benefit for 2012-13 are unlikely to find major differences in the support they receive to pay their Council Tax bill.

If you were in receipt of Council Tax Benefit at 31 March 2013 you will have automatically been transferred to the new Council Tax Reduction Scheme.

What can you do?

You should check how much Council Tax you are due to pay - any new claim for support for paying your Council Tax (the new Council Tax Reduction Scheme) will have to be made direct to the Council.
