The changes to waste and recycling services will be introduced across the city in phases.

Important information about food waste liners: If you would like to know more about where to purchase these or which alternatives can be used to line your caddy please visit the Food Waste Liners webpage.

Your NEW Recycling Service explained - your containers & what goes where:

There are two collection systems  - one for KERBSIDE properties (households which have their own bins which they present at the kerbside on collection day) and COMMUNAL (flatted households who share containers with neighbours - either on-street or in a bin storage area).

When the new services started in your area you will have received:

Food waste bins Burgundy bins Blue bins General waste

Food Waste

An internal kitchen caddy, plus a roll of compostable liners for the caddy, and either an individual external container OR a communal on-street container for food waste.

The external container should be used for the full liners of food waste. Once the kitchen caddy is full, residents are asked to tie off the liner and then put it into the external communal bin or individual container. This will be collected weekly.

The burgundy or burgundy lidded bin should be used for all colours of mixed glass (drinks bottles, medicine bottles, food jars). This will be collected every 4 weeks.

Paper, cardboard, metal & plastic

The blue or blue lidded bin is for paper, card, metals (food & drinks tins, lids from jars & bottles) and plastics (bottles, butter tubs, meat trays etc) and will be collected every 2 weeks.

General Waste

General waste moves from weekly collection to every two weeks.

Kerbside properties received wheeled bins and food waste caddies as standard but flatted properties were individually assessed to determine the most suitable container types, locations and frequency.

All households involved received a Teaser postcard advising them when the service will start in their area. Download the Teaser postcard for phase 2 kerbside properties (202KB PDF). Download the Teaser postcard for phase 2 for flats (272KB PDF).

Once the service was due to begin, all households will have received a full services information leaflet.

Why we are introducing this service

Dundee City Council currently recycles 34% of household waste and we would like to thank you for helping us achieve this; but we need to do more. We need to improve and enhance our existing recycling services and expand these city-wide to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to recycle as much as they can.

In addition, recent changes in legislation require all Scottish Local Authorities to offer recycling collections for glass, paper, card, plastics and metals to all households, as well as a separate collection of food waste, and tough new targets mean that we need to achieve a 60% recycling rate by 2020.
