Aids and Adaptations for Independent Living
Dundee City Council can provide aids and adaptations to enable people with a physical disability to live as independently as possible.
If you are a council tenant and either you or a member of your family has a disability we may be able to help you by:
- Providing special equipment to help you with daily living
- Adapting your present home
- Re-housing you to a suitably adapted home
Special Equipment
Depending on your needs you may only require some equipment to help you live in your present home, such as a walking frame or bath and kitchen aids.
Adapting Your Present Home
If provision of special equipment is not enough to help you to live independently, a range of adaptations can be made. Adaptations are permanent changes to your home and range from minor fittings to major alterations.
Minor Adaptations
These are simple adaptations, for example: raising the height of sockets, provision of grabrails at the bath or shower and external handrails.
Major Adaptations
This type of adaptation is more complex and the changes that can be done will depend on the layout and structure of your home. Examples of this type of adaptation are replacing a bath with a level access shower, widening of doors, kitchen alterations and replacement of outside steps with a ramp.
Re-housing
If your present home cannot be adapted to suit your needs, you will be considered for re-housing to a house that has the facilities to help you to lead a full life.
We have adapted housing in most areas of the city. Many properties are linked to a warden call system, which allows you to call for help and support if you need it.
Your type of disability, where your family and friends live and other relevant factors will be taken into consideration before an offer is made to you.
Decisions on re-housing are made by the Committee for Re-housing of People with Physical Disabilities. Staff from Housing, Social Work and the Health Board make up this committee and each application is considered individually.
Your Social Worker/Care Manager, Occupational Therapist or any other carer can refer you to the Committee.
You can also ask for a Medical Assessment form from your medical practice, from the Lettings Centre or from your District Housing Office. Once you have completed the form you can return it to your Medical Practice or
