The minute of meeting of this Committee of 15th October, 2001 was held as read.

Councillor Neil GLEN, Convener, paid tribute to Mr Bruce Robertson, former Chief Environmental Services Officer who had died recently. The Committee extended its thoughts and wishes to his family.

The Director for Environmental and Consumer Protection reported that notices had been served on the owners of the undernoted property requiring works to be carried out.

The Committee authorised the Director to carry out the work should the owners not comply within the time allowed in the Notices.

 

II THE REVIEW AND ASSESSMENT OF AIR QUALITY IN DUNDEE

 

Reference was made to Article IV of the minute of meeting of this Committee of 17th September 2001, wherein the Committee agreed the purchase of a Static Air Quality Station.

 

The Committee approved expenditure amounting to 2,500 associated with the installation cost and architectural services fees for a Static Air Quality Unit at a site in Broughty Ferry Road, Dundee to carry out further assessment for PM 10 and sulphur dioxide.

 

III LEASE OF WORKSHOP EQUIPMENT

 

There was submitted Report No. 739-2001 by the Director of Environmental and Consumer Protection seeking authorisation to lease nineteen various items or sets of equipment which would be used within the new workshops for vehicle inspections, repairs and maintenance for the Environmental and Consumer Protection Department's fleet.

 

The Committee agreed to accept the offers detailed for acceptance in the Report.

 

IV EXTENSION OF THE COMPOST BIN COLLECTION SYSTEM

 

Reference was made to Article V of the minute of meeting of this Committee of 15th January 2001, wherein the Committee agreed proposals which would enhance recycling initiatives within Dundee.

 

There was submitted Report No. 740-2001 seeking authority to extend the compost bin collection system.

 

The Committee agreed that approximately 2000 households in the areas detailed in the Report, be issued with a 140 litre compost bin which would be emptied on a fortnightly basis from March to November.

 

V LEASE OF WORKSHOPS BRAKE TESTER

 

There was submitted Report No. 741-2001 by the Director of Environmental and Consumer Protection seeking authorisation to lease a roller brake tester for use at the Marchbanks Vehicle Workshops.

 

The Committee agreed to accept an offer amounting to 3,050 per annum from Stertil Airtec Limited for the BT 6000 16 tonne tester on the terms and conditions detailed in the Report.

VI ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION ACT 1990, SECTION 80

 

The Committee noted that following a complaint from a resident in the Laburn Street area of the City, the Director of Environmental and Consumer Protection, in consultation with the Convener and the spokespersons from the major and minor opposition groups had approved the issue of an Abatement Notice in respect of a statutory nuisance caused by water penetration from houses at Garland Place, Dundee.
