A successful scheme designed to create consumer confidence in selecting businesses is gaining popularity across Scotland.

The Dundee Trusted Trader scheme helps protect members of the community by encouraging local people to deal with local trusted firms. It promotes good business practice and helps to protect people from doorstep crime.

Scheme members comply with a code of practice which includes providing customers the chance to review their service.

The Dundee Trusted Trader Scheme, launched a decade ago, has increased the types of businesses it includes. With it’s origins in the home improvement sector it has expanded to include a variety of businesses, ranging from accountants to osteopaths. Currently the Dundee scheme has 145 member firms. Due to its success locally it has now been adopted by other Scottish local authorities.

Alan Ross convener of Dundee City Council’s community safety and public protection committee said: “It is great to see the positive impact the Trusted Trader Scheme has had in the past ten years for both consumers and businesses.

“Consumer confidence is at an all time high in Dundee and the scheme is proving particularly popular and useful to some of the most vulnerable members of our communities.

“I am sure the scheme will continue to improve upon the work that they do.”

Feedback from consumers and businesses has been consistently positive, with the scheme proving particularly effective in reaching people over 50, a group most vulnerable to door step crime.

Confidence in Trusted Trader has created a core group of users who come back to the scheme repeatedly when they need services in the city.

Businesses too have reaped the rewards generating more than £14m in the past decade.

The Neighbourhood Services Committee meets on Monday (September 12) and will consider a progress report on the Trusted Trader scheme.

Any local consumer or business wanting more information on the Trusted Trader Scheme should visit or call Dundee (01382) 436260.
