DUNDEE FUN AND FOOD HOLIDAY PROGRAMME

The Children and Families Service Committee will be updated on the Fun and Food Holiday Programme and hear how the scheme could be supported beyond the 2016/17 financial year on Monday (October 31).

The aim of the Dundee Fun and Food Holiday Programme is to reduce disadvantages in the city by supporting activities and by providing provision or accessibility to meals during the holidays for children in need of support.

In April 2016 four pilots were delivered in the Lochee and East End wards to test out the practicalities of the programme.

Over 20,000 meals were delivered as part of the programme, an average of 638 meals were delivered a day, over the 30 day programme to 20 different holiday activities, to the 6 Community Regeneration Areas in Dundee.

Feedback from the University of Glasgow has shown that that children who took part in the summer activates have gone back to school more settled and ready to learn as a result of participation in the programme.

Due to the success of the programme a charitable body will be set up to fundraise and co-ordinate the programme to ensure the sustainability the programme.

Children and Families Service Convener Councillor Stewart Hunter said: “While I am pleased to see that many positive points that are highlighted in the report, I want to ensure that even more of our young people can maximise their potential.

“The programme has proved hugely beneficial to children who participated in the activities.

“We are determined to continue our efforts to ensure that as many of our pupils can go on to positive destinations.”

The Dundee Fun and Food Holiday Programme success is due to partnership working, including the important involvement of the third sector.

Dundee City Council collaborates with Northwood Trust, The Rank Foundation, Radio Tay, DC Thomson, Tayside Contracts, and Dundee Foodbank.

The Children and Families Service Committee meets on Monday (October 31).
