Public service award winner09/12/16
A TEAM of employees from Dundee City Council is “well” pleased after picking up a prestigious national public service award.
The Equally Well team won the Employee Development and Skills category in the recent
Scottish Public Service Awards which celebrate excellence in the sector in Scotland, covering the whole of civic society.
As part of implementing Dundee’s Fairness Strategy the city council’s Equally Well and Welfare Rights teams developed a new interactive and thought-provoking Poverty Sensitive Practice training session to support frontline staff to offer positive, non-judgemental, holistic services for people who live in poverty.
Much had been done to raise awareness of the impact of welfare reform but little work had been undertaken on the negative attitudes towards people in poverty that can sometimes be demonstrated by service providers and perpetuated by the media.
Eligible organisations included not just all 32 local councils but also the civil service, Scottish Government, Scottish Parliament, the Third Sector, Non-Departmental Public Bodies such as SEPA and national bodies including the Scottish Prison Service.
The winners were announced at a ceremony in Edinburgh.
