Dundee City Council struck gold when they were the only local authority in Scotland to be awarded with the Defence Employers Recognition Scheme Gold Award 2016.

The gold award was initially presented to representatives of the local authority by Prince William in October and will now be officially handed over during a presentation to the city’s Veterans Champion, Lord Provost Bob Duncan, at a Firm Base meeting on Wednesday (December 7).

This achievement recognises and thanks the council for their continued support to Armed Forces personnel and their families.

The local authority has had a long and mutually supportive relationship with the Armed Forces which was formalised when the Council, along with representatives of military and ex-service organisations, signed the Armed Forces Community Covenant in March 2012 then the updated Armed Forces Covenant earlier this year

Dundee City Council promotes services to armed forces personnel, veterans and their families to ensure uptake of welfare benefits and money advice services, housing options, education, access to leisure facilities, social care services and employability and training services.

Veterans Champion Lord Provost Bob Duncan said: “I’m very honoured to receive this award today.

“It’s a great achievement for the council and highlights our commitment to support the Armed Forces and veterans’.

“Ensuring that service personnel, including reservists, and veterans don’t face any disadvantages is a major achievement of this city and something I am proud to be champion of.”

Firm Base is the name given to a network of groups covering the whole of Scotland which bring together the armed forces, veterans’ organisations, charities which support the military and their families and the local authorities and health services.
