End to Child Burial Fees Proposed18/06/18
Dundee City Council is planning to end internment fees for the burials of children.
The policy and resources committee will be asked to approve the proposal following the announcement that the Scottish Government would be working with COSLA to remove all local authority charges for child burials.
City council leader Councillor John Alexander said: “As part of the ongoing work following on from the recommendations of the Fairness Commission, we have considered funeral poverty and the financial impact that the death of a child can have on families.
“The loss of a child is a difficult enough time for families without them having to worry about the cost of burial. As a father, I can’t begin to understand the trauma of losing a child but it’s important we support families faced with this difficult situation.”
Councillor Alexander added: “The Scottish Government and COSLA should be commended for their role in allowing this to happen.
“The city council is committed to its fairness agenda and trying to make a difference for people across Dundee.”
The policy and resources committee meets on Monday June 25.
