WARPit Saves Thousands21/08/18
A SCHEME run by Dundee City Council to reduce waste and with it carbon emissions, has saved charities and cash-strapped public bodies more than £300,000 in five years.
The council has been a member of WARPit since 2013 and in recent months has seen a boost from the surplus furniture, fixtures and fittings generated by new replacement schools opening across the city.
Lynne Short convener of the council’s City Development committee said: “We’ve spent many millions of pounds on new schools and community facilities that are now getting opened and what that has done is free up furniture that has been donated to WARPit for re-use.
“Our partners in the WARPit scheme have been able to take their pick from chairs, tables, cupboards and lots more useful items that they might have had to buy new.
“Almost £100,000 worth of material including fridges, bookcases and stationary has been donated to more than a dozen public and third sector partners since we became members.
“Being part of WARPit means we all save money, but we also help to reduce waste and carbon emissions.”
Launched five years ago, WARPit aims to provide a network where organisations keep their equipment and assets circulating to reduce spend, waste and supply chain environmental impacts.
As well as reducing waste and carbon emissions the network makes it easy for staff to reduce unnecessary purchasing and for their organisations to divert surplus resources to local charities and social enterprises.
In the past five years, the WARPit scheme in Dundee has diverted 52 tonnes of waste from landfill or incineration, as well as saving 151 tonnes of carbon emissions.
The project has also achieved a Green Apple Scotland Award for its commitment to improving the sustainability of the council, its partners, local charities and social enterprises.
When the money saved on buying equipment internally and externally, waste reduction, and staff time is totalled, the council has saved £332,905 by donating assets, as well as claiming those no longer needed by other organisations.
