A ground-breaking Dundee project has been announced as the winner of a prestigious Scottish Public Service Award 2020.

The Dundee Green Health Partnership received this year’s Colin Mair Award for Policy in Practice, an award that recognises the implementation of policy which has made a real practical difference to people’s lives.

The project, which sits in Dundee City Council’s Greenspace Team and is co-managed by NHS Tayside Public Health, uses nature as a local resource to benefit residents’ health and wellbeing through various activities.

Dr Viola Marx, Dundee Green Health Partnership Coordinator, said: “I’m very grateful for the recognition this award brings for the project. Every day we are connecting people with the outdoors for physical and mental health benefits particularly concentrating on the alleviation of health inequalities.

“We developed the innovative Green Health Prescriptions pathway which gives health professionals access to connecting their patients with activities such as walking, gardening or cycling using electric tricycles to get those less able outside and connected to greenspaces.

“Despite the pandemic, we were able to adapt our way of working through introducing initiatives such as bird-feeding projects for those shielding, a garden-based wellbeing drop-in for hospital staff, making ebikes available to the community to stay active, and develop online activities for all ages and needs.

“We very much appreciate the work and support from our partners, including DVVA, to deliver these.”

Neighbourhood Services Convener, Councillor Anne Rendall, said: “The project carries out some fantastic and invaluable work. It’s great to see the Green Partnership being recognised nationally, it shows that the nature of the work being carried out is so innovative and leading.

“We’re blessed in the city with the nature that surrounds us and initiatives like the Green Health Partnership can help us all to enjoy it in our own way, get health benefits from it and get outdoors.”

Dundee City Council’s Dundee Climate Action Plan was also nominated for the Sustainability Award at this year’s 2020 Scottish Public Service Awards.
