As Dundee nurseries and schools look forward to the summer break starting on Friday (June 25), a senior councillor is sending a message of thanks to all pupils, families and staff for their efforts during the “most challenging of times”.

And he is praising the efforts of social workers and officers for supporting vulnerable city children throughout the pandemic.

Councillor Stewart Hunter is recognising the contribution of everyone connected with the city’s nursery and school communities as coronavirus continued to have an impact.

The children and families convener said: “This last school year has been the most challenging of times, with our nursery, primary and secondary communities facing multiple covid-related issues.

“However, our pupils, families and staff have been so resilient.

“They have worked to get through closures by adapting to learn from home and then supported safety measures when classrooms opened again.

“In recent weeks, we have we have seen an escalation in the number of pupils and staff self-isolating as cases have risen across Dundee.

“Our schools have worked closely with local public health experts to ensure that the appropriate measures are taken and that nurseries and schools are as safe as possible.

“Life has been very different in all our nurseries and schools and this has been a difficult year.

“Throughout the pandemic, our social work and children’s staff have maintained contact and support for some of the most vulnerable children in the city and that vital work is much appreciated.”

Councillor Hunter added: “Our senior pupils have also coped with the cancellation of exams and the replacement assessment process.

“I would like to take this opportunity to record my thanks to everyone for their commitment to our nurseries and schools and the support that has been shown by these communities.

“I hope they can all have an enjoyable summer break ahead.”
