Businesses in Dundee are being invited to join the new ‘Scotland Loves Local’ service, a national campaign encouraging residents to think and choose local first.

The ‘Scotland Loves Local Gift Card’ is being rolled out across Dundee, and aims to support local businesses to get back on their feet after the COVID-19 lockdown.

The initiative has been designed by the Scottish Government-supported ‘Scotland’s Towns Partnership’, and will be helped locally by Dundee City Council and the Dundee and Angus Chamber of Commerce.

The Gift Card is free for businesses to sign-up to receive payments through, and uses the MasterCard network.

City Development Convener Councillor Mark Flynn said: “I would encourage local businesses to take up this opportunity as a way to potentially increase sales growth as well as their local customer base.

“The scheme has worked successfully elsewhere in Scotland and could play a vital part in the city’s economic recovery from the COVID-19 lockdown. Businesses have played an important role in their communities throughout the pandemic and this project will reward residents for returning the favour by shopping locally.”

Chief Executive of Dundee and Angus Chamber of Commerce Alison Henderson said: ““I’m very optimistic about the potential of this scheme for the city and the launch of the Love Dundee Local scheme at the end of 2020 has also allowed many businesses in Dundee to adapt to the difficult circumstances they operate in.

“The introduction of a Dundee-specific Gift Card scheme will contribute significantly in encouraging residents to support the city’s local businesses. With the service being free, simple to use and opening up new opportunities at an important time, I hope many of the city’s businesses look to adopt the new service.”

STP Chief Officer Phil Prentice said: “In every community across Scotland, the power of choosing local and supporting businesses in our home areas should not be underestimated. As individuals, making the right choice has never been more important for our communities.

“As more options open up, we cannot afford to overlook the people and businesses who have been there when we needed them most during the pandemic.

“We need people to make a conscious decision to support those around them – whether for shopping, services, a meal with friends or a day out. By choosing local every time, we will make a tremendous difference to the fabric and fortunes of our communities.

“If there is a positive which has come from the pandemic it is the way that we have all embraced local life. We must enhance that during recovery so that we do not fall back into unsustainable habits of the past. The future of businesses and jobs around us depends upon it.”

Businesses can register to take part in the scheme via the Scotland Loves Local website.

More information on the scheme for businesses considering signing-up is available in the Frequently Asked Questions section of the Scotland Loves Local website.

The Scotland Loves Local Gift Card scheme follows the roll-out of the ‘Love Dundee Local’ service, website and mobile app which his designed to help companies serve local people.

City businesses still have the opportunity to join ‘Love Dundee Local’ to offer food, drinks and other products for collection or delivery, in a new way.
