Dundee carbon-cutting workshop as part of the Race to Zero26/10/21
Businesses, organisations and individuals will be offered practical carbon reduction advice at a major net zero event in Dundee this Thursday (28 October).
The workshop is being provided by Planet Mark – a leading sustainability and net zero certification group – and forms part of the UN-backed Race to Zero and Together for Our Planet campaigns.
The event, which can be attended in person or online, is being held at Dundee Science Centre and supported by Dundee City Council and the UK Government’s Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy (BEIS) department.
Speakers from local organisations will also share their experiences in a series of “carbon stories.”
The event is part of Planet Mark’s Zero Carbon Tour, which will see a fully electric-powered “carbon battle bus” visit 30 towns and cities across the UK. The Tour began in Cambridge and will finish in Glasgow for COP26.
Planet Mark’s team will demonstrate to attendees how they can set their own credible carbon reduction targets and implement plans to achieve them in line with the Race to Zero’s rigorous criteria.
The event will empower local people and organisations to become part of a greater national effort to protect our environment by demystifying what is needed to achieve net zero. It will also highlight the good work many organisations are already doing to address their carbon output.
Dundee City Council leader John Alexander said: “Dundee’s climate action plan includes a commitment to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2045 or sooner.
“In order to achieve that, we need to act now. And there are things we can all do, from large organisations like the city council to individuals and families, in order to play our part.
“As COP26 approaches, this event is a fantastic opportunity to find out more about the importance of net zero, and get practical advice on how you can reduce your own carbon footprint and help shape a brighter future.”
Steve Malkin, founder and CEO of Planet Mark, said: “We are delighted to be collaborating with Dundee City Council, Sustainable Dundee and Dundee Science Centre on this Zero Carbon Tour flagship event as part of the Together For Our Planet campaign in the build up to COP26.
“We look forward to gathering in-person and online with the Dundee community to talk about how all organisations, communities and individuals can contribute to the fight against climate change by committing to net zero carbon. Through the critical Race to Zero we can all play a part in our planet’s future”.
Lorraine Lemon, Dundee Science Centre’s Head of Business and Operations, said, “We are very happy to be hosting Planet Mark’s Carbon Battle Bus Tour. Opportunities such as this are an interesting and unique way to get the local community engaged in scientific innovations and highlight the fun and innovative role that STEM can have on our everyday lives.”
Race to Zero is the UN-backed, global campaign to rally leadership and support from all non-state actors for a healthy, resilient, zero carbon recovery. All members are credibly committed to the same overarching goal: halving global emissions by 2030 and achieving net zero emissions as soon as possible, and by 2050 at the very latest. Planet Mark is one of the campaign’s 11 formal partners for businesses.
