Hello, and welcome to my End of Month Blog #9 as the Lord Provost of Dundee.

This month, I continued to share information about the role of the Lord Provost and the Lord Provost’s Office and Civic Department within the city.

Across February, I focused on the role of the Depute Lord Provost, the position of the Vice Lord-Lieutenant, and explained that the Lord Provost of Dundee on occasion can receive offers of the position of Honorary President of organisations.

Activities over the past month included:

  • On 1st February, nominations opened to find Dundee’s 2023 Citizen of the Year. We want to recognise an individual in the city who is carrying out voluntary work for their community and is having a positive impact. Nominations are still currently open;
  • On Thurs 2nd, I attended the Dundee Rep: Architecture in Context presentations and subsequent Q&A;
  • On Fri 3rd, I was present at the Dundee & Angus College Gardyne Campus for the Lego League Regional Final with nineteen schools competing. I had the privilege of giving out prizes at the end of proceedings;
  • I visited and was given a tour of the new Royal Tay Yacht Club clubhouse on Sunday 5th following an invite from Commodore Ralph Hopkins. This coincided with the Club’s Annual General Meeting;
  • On Tues 7th, alongside Council Leader John Alexander, I visited the city’s Reconnection Project based at The Friary on Tullideph Road. We were shown around various parts of the project including the garden and woodwork area;
  • At the invitation of the Black Watch Association, Depute Lord Provost Kevin Cordell attended the annual Red Hackle dinner at the Black Watch Club in Dundee on Friday 10th;
  • On Monday 13th, I visited Discovery Flexibles Limited with City Development Convener Cllr Mark Flynn. We were given a tour of the premises by owner, CEO Jimmy Urquhart;
  • On Tuesday 14th, I met with 2022 Dundee Citizen of the Year winner Russell Pepper to present him with the Dundee Citizen of the Year trophy;
  • Friday 24th marked one year since the invasion of Ukraine, I sent a message of support sending my thoughts to the Ukrainian people, including those now here in Dundee and separated from their families and friends;
  • I attended and cut the ribbon for the official opening of new business to the city, the Malting House Marketing & Design Studio, on Friday 24th;
  • I also recently visited Grove Academy in Broughty Ferry to hand over a wreath and a card on behalf of the city. This maintains the tradition whereby some young pupils at Grove Academy travelled to Ypres in West Flanders to lay the wreath at Menin Gate ceremony.

For updates as they occur, the latest Lord Provost news and activities are available on both Facebook and Twitter.

Thank you for taking the time to read my Blog and I hope to update you further on my civic responsibilities in the next edition which will summarise my activity across March.
