Dundee shoppers are being encouraged to Love Local!

A campaign is ongoing this week to raise awareness of the economic benefits of spending in city shops and businesses.

It comes as city food outlet The Cheesery in Exchange Street becomes the latest to sign up to be included in the Scotland Loves Local Dundee gift card initiative.

The gift card is intended to treat someone to the very best that Dundee has to offer - shops, sights and experiences, fantastic local food and drink, hairdressing and beauty, cafes and restaurants, and more - all providing a warm Dundee welcome.

Hilary Barney of The Cheesery said: “The Cheesery is involved in Love Local because, now, more than ever, it is so important to shop local.

“Love Local is a great initiative and gives people variety of where to shop and how to use their card. The perfect gift!

“The high street is struggling, but local businesses create diversity and are so good for our local economy and community.”

Over 230 local businesses are now involved across Dundee and accept the card.

Research shows people will spend up to 65% more if they use the card, and that it helps to drive footfall and stimulates wider economic activity

Fair work, economic growth and infrastructure convener Cllr Steven Rome visited The Cheesery to discuss how spending local has a big impact.

He said: “I am delighted that more and more Dundee business are realising the benefits of signing up to the gift card.

“It makes the local choice easy for shoppers, while retailers benefit from the support of the Loves Local brand. It is helping to stimulate our local economy and support Dundee jobs.”

CEO of Dundee and Angus Chamber of Commerce Alison Henderson said: “It’s important that we have a thriving, vibrant city, filled with people who want to buy local and support their business community.

Our businesses work hard to bring us a great choice of things to buy, experience and enjoy. Being able to use the Dundee Loves Local gift card across the whole city gives people lots of choice, from gorgeous things to eat and drink, to interesting places to visit and spend time with friends and family.

I’d encourage everyone to get out this week and find a Dundee Loves Local business to support.”

The first Scotland Loves Local Week tuns from August 28 - September 3.

Scotland Loves Local is managed by Scotland’s Towns Partnership (STP), with support from the Scottish Government. More details can be found at www.lovelocal.scot  and by following #ScotlandLovesLocal on social media.
