Dundee City Council has launched a third round of the Dundee Climate Fund welcoming applications from community groups and projects to fund ideas for local community action.

The Dundee Climate Fund has been the first council-led green participatory budgeting scheme in Scotland with 22 city projects so far benefitting from a share of around £750,000 from the first and second rounds of the initiative.

A celebration event recently took place at Ninewells Community Garden to mark the progress made by the Fund while also welcoming new community groups not involved in climate action to participate.

Climate, Environment & Biodiversity Convener Cllr Heather Anderson said: “We’ve been so impressed by the energy, creativity and achievements of all the groups who benefited from the first two rounds of the Dundee Climate Fund, we’ve decided to do it again!

“Rounds 1 and 2 of the Fund supported a wide range of initiatives - from developing community gardens, reducing food waste, increasing electric transport, running educational sessions, undertaking energy efficiency projects and much more.

“With the opening of the third round of the Fund, we are both welcoming applications from new projects and encouraging existing projects to apply for continuation funding to develop the good work they are already doing.”

The Dundee Climate Fund 3.0 key themes consist of:

  • Energy - reduce consumption, promote energy efficiency, and harness the power of renewables;
  • Transport – get people moving with active travel and work towards decarbonising our transport systems;
  • Waste - minimise waste, develop circularity, embrace recycling, and find creative ways to keep using resources for longer;
  • Resilience – strengthen our greenspaces, boost biodiversity, and support local food initiatives; and
  • Raising awareness – spread the word, engage our communities, and inspire the next generation of climate champions.

Dundee-based not-for-profit, constituted groups can find details on the concepts and how to match their skills and apply for funding on the Dundee’s Voice website. Projects can apply for funding between £2,000 and £25,000.

All applications must be made by 30th September 2024, and after being screened for their feasibility and eligibility by a reviewing panel, the allocation of funding will be determined by a public vote in early 2025.
