The Dundee Hooley is Back!
04/11/24The Dundee Hooley is back and bigger than ever. Taking place on Sunday, 1st December, this year’s event promises an unforgettable experience with giant puppets, live performances, and activities for all ages, including the iconic torchlight procession.
The family friendly and free event at Meadowside, from 3pm – 8pm draws on both festive and community traditions, with a Main Stage and a Performance Stage hosting an exciting array of street and dance acts, and electrifying music. A giant lobster takeover will make it a truly unique celebration.
World renowned Thingumajig Theatre will bring their giant illuminated animal puppets including a unicorn and dragon, both created by local artists. These stunning puppets will light up the torchlight procession and can also be seen at the Street Performance Area on Reform Street.
Everyone from Dundee and beyond is invited to join the torchlight procession as it winds through the city centre, starting and ending at the High School of Dundee. Participants can add to the glow of the event by carrying a torch or a lantern crafted at one of the free lantern-making workshops running throughout November.
The Kid’s Area will keep both grown-ups and little ones enthralled as they get their picture taken in front of The McManus with a giant fire breathing Dragon Sculpture lurking on the steps of the building. The fun doesn’t stop there, there are also bubble shows, face painting, a silent disco, and a gaming van to explore.
Throughout the event there will be captivating performances to enjoy. PyroCeltica will bring their renowned Celtic Fire Theatre to the celebration, while local groups such as Showcase the Street and Urban Moves will bring Dundee’s dynamic dance scene alive.
Lord Provost Bill Campbell is leading the torchlit parade. He said: “This is a chance for people from across the city, and further afield to celebrate St Andrew’s Day and the start of the festive season with a magical display of creativity and artistry. We are looking forward to making the procession one to remember with people either taking part or lining the streets, taking in the magical scene.
“Spaces to take part are limited and given on a first-come-first-served basis, so I would encourage everyone to be quick to register via visit dundee.com and secure their free spot.”
Participants can add a personal touch to the procession by joining free, hands-on lantern-making workshops, where they’ll craft Scottish animal-themed lanterns to light up the Hooley. Workshops are open to all ages, with pre-bookable and drop-in options available.
The parade will start and end at the High School of Dundee playground on Euclid Crescent, winding through Euclid Crescent, Panmure Street, Murraygate, High Street, Reform Street, and back to the High School playground. The procession is scheduled to depart at 5:30 pm, with registered participants asked to line up from 4:45 pm, and will last approximately one hour.
The Dundee Hooley is part of Dundee’s Christmas, a season-long celebration that will see the city transformed from November 21st to January 5th. City Square will become a winter wonderland featuring a real ice rink, traditional market stalls with local food, drink, and unique gifts, and festive fairground attractions. Each evening, a light show will illuminate the Square, and families can book an immersive Santa experience, designed to spark joy for all ages.
As the evening progresses, The Dundee Hooley will feature live music by Celtic fusion bands Skyrie and AWRY, as well as Mr. Wilson’s Second Liners, who bring new life to 90s club classics with their spirited style. Street traders will be on hand to provide warm food and drinks.
