A senior councillor is praising the “energy and innovation” that was shown during the Dundee Economic Summit today (Wed June 18).

The sold-out event heard speakers including Deputy First Minister Kate Forbes, as well as digital pioneer and entrepreneur Martha Lane Fox.

The Dundee Partnership summit brought together an audience of business leaders, policymakers, and key stakeholders dedicated to driving economic growth and innovation across Dundee and the surrounding region.

Dundee City Council convener of Fair Work, Economic Growth and Infrastructure Steven Rome addressed the summit and introduced Kate Forbes.

His presentation reflected on the changing face of Dundee and the Waterfront, as well as the rise of new economic sectors like life sciences and healthcare, gaming, the creative industries and low-carbon technologies.

Councillor Rome also explained how the creation of an economic vision for the future of the city – Dundee's Growth Story – will identify the opportunities to drive economic growth.

He said: “We’re proud of the progress Dundee has made so far, but we also recognise that there’s still much more to do. Our goal is clear: to build a vibrant, inclusive economy that creates jobs for our people and contributes meaningfully to Scotland’s national growth.

“That is why we are developing a new Economic Vision and Action Plan which will identify the key opportunities we can build on to drive economic growth, such as transitioning to a knowledge economy or leading the way in clean, green growth.

“It will also help us to tackle the big challenges such as stimulating population growth, reducing unemployment and supporting our businesses as they transition to net zero.”
“Engagement is a crucial part of that process, and it was important that we used time at the summit to gather ideas on how we can work together with a range of partners to take the vision forward.

“I was impressed by the levels of energy and innovation that were being shown during the summit and this gives me real optimism for the future.

“I would like to thank everyone who attended the summit, as well as the organisers. The benefits will be felt as we all continue our work together to make the city a better place for everyone.”
