Senior councillors are welcoming a housing report highlighting that Dundee has shown the highest increase in Britain for first-time buyer inquiries.

They say that the figures are a testament to the city’s regeneration efforts, alongside work to support and encourage the local property market.

Property website Rightmove has published analysis of Britain’s fifty largest cities, excluding London, and fifty of the most popular coastal areas. It focused on inquiries for typical first-time buyer properties, those with a maximum of two bedrooms, and compared data between 2015 and 2025.

Dundee has seen first-time buyer demand increase by 176% over that period, according to the figures.

Fair Work, Economic Growth and Infrastructure convener Councillor Steven Rome said: “We are encouraged by this survey which show Dundee as a city hotspot in Britain for first-time buyers.

“We are working hard with our partners across the public and private sectors to make Dundee an attractive and affordable place for people to live, and, as a clear result of these efforts, we are already seeing our population rising. Transformation of the city has been an important element in this.

“Dundee needs a mix of housing types and I am delighted to see how different developments have been completed across the city in the last few years, adding to the stock which already exists.”

Councillor Kevin Cordell, neighbourhood regeneration, housing and estate management convener, added: “These figures are great news and indicate that the city is growing in popularity.

“But we are under no illusions that we need to work hard to keep up the momentum and ensure we can make the city a better place for everyone.

“That is why it is so vital that through our Strategic Housing Investment Plan, we can encourage Registered Social Landlord to ensure that the supply of affordable accommodation continues to increase.”
