Consultation plans for Dundee's Draft Nature Network

Community engagement could be sought on a Dundee Nature Network if Councillors give the go ahead for consultation plans.
A draft Nature Network has been proposed for the city to address biodiversity loss which can be caused by changes in land use and fragmentation of habitats over time, as well as the effects of climate change.
This approach carefully considers areas of significant ecological value in the city and assesses their connectivity, whilst exploring opportunities to restore degraded habitats, improve site management and links between habitats.
The draft Network Map was designed utilising available data of habitats and species, mapping tools provided by NatureScot as well as local knowledge and experience of Dundee’s greenspaces.
Climate, Net Zero and Environment Committee Convener Cllr Heather Anderson said: “Dundee’s nature is incredibly important to the city but it doesn’t just take care of itself – we need to support it in order for it to thrive.
“Despite being such a small, urban local authority, 42% of Dundee is accessible, green space. As nature is our key ally in combating the impact of the changing weather on the city, it’s vitally important that we protect, enrich and expand that space.
“The people of Dundee can help by taking part in the planned consultation, if approved by Committee, and share their knowledge and thoughts on how best to protect and enhance our local ecosystems through this Nature Network.
“As part of the process, funding has also been identified from the Nature Restoration Fund to allow for a community engagement event to take place in March in which community groups and members of the public are invited to get involved.”
The city’s Climate, Net Zero and Environment Committee will meet on Monday 16th February to discuss the plans for a consultation process.
If the plans are agreed, details of the March consultation event will be publicised widely through the Council’s usual channels.
