Senior Dundee councillors have visited the site of what will be a new primary school for the Western Gateway area, as preparatory survey works continue at Newmill of Gray.

Council leader Cllr Mark Flynn was joined by convener of Children and Families Cllr Stewart Hunter and depute convener of Children and Families Cllr Roisin Smith.

They spoke to representatives of Robertson Construction about progress on site.

Cllr Flynn said: “I am pleased with the survey work that is underway, which shows the real progress that we are making on the ground.

“We also continue to liaise closely with the housing developer during this process.

Cllr Hunter said: “£25 million has been allocated to the new school in the council’s capital plan, which demonstrates how committed we are to this vital development for the Western Gateway.

“I am pleased at the continued progress that is being made on this project, which will be a major boost for this growing area of the city.”

The local authority is working closely with housing developer Barratt Homes in relation to the site of the primary school.

It is anticipated that the new school will open in August 2029 at a budget cost of £25 million, which is contained within the council’s Capital Plan 2025-2030.

The council is using a single supplier national framework procurement approach, with Robertson Construction as the appointed contractor.

As work on the new school advances, a project board will be set up and will engage with stakeholders, and a planning application will be submitted by the council for the school. Cllr Smith added: “I look forward to the new school taking shape and becoming a real focus of community life for the future. It has been great to be able to visit the site and hear updates on the survey work that is being carried out.”

Kevin Dickson, Regional Managing Director, Robertson Construction Tayside said:

“High-quality school provision is essential as new communities grow. The initial work at Western Gateway will help build a clear understanding of the site and how the project will develop.

“Robertson has extensive experience delivering award-winning education facilities across the country. We continue our long-standing successful working relationship with Dundee City Council as plans for the new school progress.”

A spokesperson for Barratt and David Wilson Homes said: “We understand that the new primary school is a vital piece of infrastructure for the growing community and an eagerly anticipated resource for local families. We will continue to work closely with Dundee City Council and local stakeholders to deliver the school and ensure the development contributes positively to the local area.”
