The Building Standards Team is the verifier for the local area, and one of their functions is to ensure compliance with the Building Regulations; to ensure the health, safety, welfare and convenience of persons in or about buildings, further the conservation of fuel and power and promote sustainable development.
Building Standards also can intervene as a last resort in situations where a building poses a danger to the public.
Furthermore, Building Standards also are involved in the process of licensed premises, houses in multiple occupation, temporary raised structures and safety at sports ground.
In the majority of cases, any alterations, conversion or erection of a building will require a Building Warrant to conduct, albeit there are some exemptions.
If you are planning any work to your building, we recommend getting in touch with the department as soon as possible, in which we are happy to advise whether a Building Warrant will be required or not to conduct the work. This usually require a description of the works proposed, and existing and proposed plans to demonstrate the proposed work.
Building Standards also offer a pre-warrant service, in which we can meet with yourself and your agent and offer advice on any obvious non-compliances.
Furthermore, we are committed to promoting development in the city as much as possible, and can engage in conversation with yourself and your agent regards to turnaround times if you demonstrate that your proposed work will bring an economic benefit to the city.
