Fire Safety in your Home
Dundee City Council is committed to helping tenants stay safe in their homes. Many incidents can be prevented through simple day-to-day actions. This guidance provides information on fire prevention, smoke and heat alarms, staying safe in multi-storey buildings, and what to do if a fire occurs.
Fire safety is everyone's responsibility. Taking a few simple precautions can help protect you, your family and your neighbours from the risk of fire.
Smoke and Heat Alarms
All homes in Scotland should have:
- A smoke alarm in the living room or main living area.
- A smoke alarm in hallways and landings.
- A heat alarm in the kitchen.
- Interlinked alarms so that when one activates, they all sound.
- A carbon monoxide detector where there is a fuel-burning appliance such as a boiler, stove or fire.
Test your Alarms
- Test your alarms regularly.
- Never remove batteries or disconnect alarms.
- Report any faults to our Housing Repairs Centre 24 hours a day 01382 434343.
Prevent Fires in the Home
You can reduce the risk of fire by:
- Never leaving cooking unattended.
- Keeping matches and lighters away from children.
- Avoiding overloading electrical sockets.
- Switching off electrical appliances when not in use where appropriate.
- Charging e-bikes, e-scooters and other battery-powered devices safely using the manufacturer's charger.
- Never smoking in bed.
- Taking extra care when using candles and naked flames.
Keep Escape Route Clear
- Keep communal corridors, landings and stairways clear at all times.
- Do not store furniture, bikes, prams, mobility scooters, rubbish bags or personal belongings in common areas.
- Never wedge open fire doors.
- Ensure your flat entrance door closes properly.
Home Fire Safety Visits
The Scottish Fire and Rescue Service offers free Home Fire Safety Visits for people who may be at greater risk from fire. During the visit they can:
- Identify potential fire risks.
- Provide advice on staying safe.
- Help create an escape plan.
- Test smoke alarms and provide additional support where appropriate.

Report Fire Safety Concerns
Please report any of the following immediately:
- Faulty communal fire doors.
- Damaged smoke vents or fire safety equipment.
- Blocked escape routes.
- Missing or damaged signage.
- Any other fire safety concerns within your building.
