Dundee continues to stand with Ukraine and is offering a place of sanctuary to those who need it.

If you are able to, you can help a person or family fleeing the war in Ukraine by providing accommodation for six to twelve months. You are able to claim optional 'thank you' payments ranging from £350-£500 for up to two years.

The amount of payment is linked to the guest and the length of time they have been in the UK.

A spare room(s) in your home or even a second home can be really beneficial. Each experience of hosting someone from Ukraine is different.

Can I speak to someone before I apply to be a host?

Yes. You can speak to one of the staff in the Council's Humanitarian Protection team, before making an application.

I have applied to host, what checks will the Council carry out and how long will it take?

Council staff will contact you to arrange to visit you, shortly after they have been notified about your application. A member of Council staff will carry out the property check and another staff member will carry out the disclosure checks for everyone over 16 living in the property. A disclosure check means sharing sensitive personal information. Disclosure Scotland checks and shares information about people’s criminal records. This information assists the council to decide if someone can be a host.

How do I claim the monthly £350 host payment?

Once your guest moves in you will be emailed a link to claim the host payment.

Payments are paid one month in arrears.
If the arrangement continued for (up to) an additional 12 months, the payment amount will increase to £500 a month for that period.

What support does the guest and host get once they move in?

You will have a contact with a member of staff within the Council's Humanitarian Protection Team. They will visit you at least once every three months, but this can be increased if necessary.
Your guest can also have a named support worker who can assist them with accessing schools, English classes, employment etc.

My circumstances have changed since I applied and I no longer want to host, what do I do?

Contact the Council's Humanitarian Protection Team and advise them that you wish to withdraw from the scheme.
You will be asked for a reason why, but you do not need to give a lot of detail e.g. "a change of circumstance" is sufficient.

I applied to be a host months ago but I have not received a guest yet, why is this?

Matching guests to hosts can take into account a variety of factors and circumstances, so the process in some cases may be quicker than with others.

What happens if I have a guest but can no longer host?

If you can no longer host you should contact the Council's Humanitarian Protection Team to let them know.

They will arrange alternative accommodation for your guest, but this may not be immediately available, so please let them know as soon as possible.
