Commercial waste is any waste or recycling produced by a business. Whether you operate out of a shop, warehouse, office, restaurant, van, or your home, you need to make sure you are using the right waste containers and have your waste collected by a licensed waste carrier.
Your Legal Obligations
Legally, you must recycle and dispose of your waste safely and securely. This means separating out paper & cardboard, metals & plastics, and glass. If your business sells, prepares or distributes food, and you produce more than 5kg of food waste each week, you must also separate this for recycling. This requirement is called your Duty of Care, and is part of the Waste (Scotland) Regulations 2012. To show you are complying with the law, your waste contractor should provide you with a waste transfer note.
Dundee City Centre Commercial Waste Pilot Project
From the 1st of March 2023, Dundee City Council is changing its procedure for the way businesses put their trade waste containers out on public roads and footways. This will initially be a 12-month pilot within the City Centre area, and if deemed a success it will become permanent. You can find out more about the scheme on the project web page, or by emailing your questions to the project team.

City Centre Collection Time Windows
As part of this pilot scheme, businesses located within the city centre boundary have been allocated 90-minute time windows to allow for presentation and collection of their waste. Bins, sacks, or cardboard bundles must be presented at the beginning of these time windows to ensure collection.

Service Delays
Bins must be removed from the street by the end of your assigned collection window. We will publish information about any service delays that may affect your collections. If your waste has not been collected by the end of the allocated time window, or as indicated in the service delay notifications, please contact Waste Management Admin by calling 01382 436228.

Wheeled Bins
These can be used for each of the separated recycling waste types and non-recyclable (general) waste, and provide a secure and efficient storage option. We offer a range of sizes, from 140 litres to 1100 litres, and collection frequencies to suit your business needs.
Additional bags presented outside of wheeled bins will not be collected.
Waste Sacks
Where space is limited, commercial waste sacks offer a more compact and flexible option for non-recyclable (general) waste collections. These are provided in rolls of 50 or 100 and are subject to a delivery charge.
When presenting commercial waste sacks for collection, these must be fastened securely to prevent the escape of any waste, and no other waste outside the bag will be collected.
Commercial Skip Hire
We can provide roll-on/roll-off skip containers in 20, 30 and 40 cubic yard capacities. These can be delivered to any suitable location throughout the city for disposal of the following waste types:
- Non-recyclable (general) waste;
- Recyclable waste including:
- Cardboard
- Paper
- Plastic
- Wood
- Metal
- Green Waste
