Dundee City Council and the Lawn Tennis Association have agreed a partnership which will see twenty-two park tennis courts in Dundee receive significant upgrades.

The seven parks will see a total of £164,000 invested on resurfacing courts where necessary, repainting court surfaces and lines, carry out infrastructure works to fencing and install smart gates. The works will add value to the Council’s previous investment in Dundee’s park tennis courts.

The recipients of the works include Baxter Park, Dawson Park, Camperdown Park, Dudhope Park, Fairmuir Park, South Road Park, and Victoria Park.

The upgrades are part of a £30 million nationwide investment by the UK Government and LTA Tennis Foundation, delivered by the LTA. Over 1,500 courts have been transformed so far as part of the LTA's Park Tennis Project.

Alongside the physical improvements, Dundee City Council will work in partnership with Tennis Scotland to manage access to the courts and develop playing programmes, including tennis for free.

Dundee City Council’s Fair Work, Economic Growth and Infrastructure Convener Councillor Steven Rome said: “It’s very positive to see this additional investment in our city’s sporting facilities for community use. This will help to ensure tennis courts within Dundee’s parks meet the high LTA standards.

“We are committed to investing in and maintaining the city’s outdoor assets, including tennis courts, as we continually make improvements to our communal outdoor spaces. The external funding secured here can help to play an important role in that process.”

Dundee City Council’s Climate, Environment & Biodiversity Convener Councillor Heather Anderson said: “This investment in the city’s tennis infrastructure and the partnership between the Council and Tennis Scotland will hopefully enable us to support many more people to enjoy playing tennis on their local court.

“The benefits from being active are clear and having the option of using high-quality tennis courts in your community can go far in helping many to maintain a healthy lifestyle.”

Julie Porter, Chief Operating Officer at the LTA, said: “We are delighted to be working with Dundee City Council to improve their park tennis facilities and provide more opportunities for anyone to pick up a racket and get active.

“This investment is part of the UK Government and LTA’s Parks Tennis Project and will mean that courts will be available for people to use for years to come. We will also be working closely with Dundee City Council to ensure that the local community have a range of accessible opportunities to get on court and open up our sport to many more people.”

City Councillors authorised the appointment of LTA’s approved contractor for the upgrade of the Dundee City Council tennis courts at the Fair Work, Economic Growth and Infrastructure Committee in November 2023.
