Living Wage Week 2024
04/11/24Dundee City Council is once again celebrating Living Wage Week.
Living Wage Week is a campaign dedicated to celebrating the Living Wage movement and looks to encourage businesses to become accredited Living Wage employers.
Recently it was announced that there will be a 5% rise in the real Living Wage making the new rate £12.60, a 60p increase. There are over 125 Living Wage accredited employers headquartered in Dundee collectively employing over 42,000 thousand workers.
During the week there will be various events including a meeting of the Dundee Living Wage Action Group, Fairness Leadership Panel conference and a networking drop-in event hosted by Social Security Scotland to introduce and raise awareness of the Living Hours initiative.
Members of the Dundee Living Wage Action Group will also be meeting with newly accredited business Avertical World to be shown the ropes on how the centre functions and hear about the difference being accredited will mean for them and their staff.
The Living Wage Awards 2024 take place on Thursday 7 November in Glasgow. The awards celebrate individuals and organisations that have made an outstanding contribution to the Living Wage movement. This year Dundee is represented in the Trailblazer Award category by DUSA for their work in the Dundee University Campus. The category is for exceptional leadership shown by organisations in their industry and supply chain by promoting the Living Wage.
Councillor Steven Rome, convener of Fair Work, Economic Growth and Infrastructure said: “It’s great to see the council is once again supporting Living Wage Week. I am looking forward to the activities planned and to see the positive news from the week.
“We are living through some challenging times, especially with the cost of living crisis, and I believe the recently increased rate of the Living Wage will have a huge impact for workers in Dundee.
“It is thrilling to welcome several newly accredited employers to the Dundee Living Wage family including the popular indoor climbing and bouldering centre Avertical World.
“I would also like to send my best wishes to DUSA and all the other nominees in the various categories at the Living Wage Awards this year.
“I completely appreciate the many challenges businesses are facing currently however I would encourage any business out there thinking of becoming accredited to get in touch with Living Wage Scotland on their website. I am incredibly proud of the work that the Living Wage Action Group do and they are always ready to help and support you to become a Living Wage accredited employer.”
