Responding to the publication Dundee City Council spokesperson on alcohol and drugs Councillor Nadia El-Nakla said: “My deepest sympathy is extended to all of those in the city who have lost loved ones.

“These are not just numbers, but sons, daughters, mothers, fathers, brothers and sisters. Every death is heartbreaking and tragic.

“Although the number has reduced, one death is one too many.

“I know from working with partners across the city that everyone is committed and determined to reduce the number of deaths and the harm caused by drugs to individuals and families across our city.

“Local agencies and organisations are working together to try and reverse issues which have been caused over the course of decades.

“We are making real progress across a number of areas, but we cannot afford to be complacent, we must be driven with conviction to have no drug deaths.

“In Dundee we have made significant improvements in the implementation of Medication Assisted Treatment (MAT) standards. People can now access treatment faster and they have a choice of what treatment they receive, as well as independent advocacy support.

“Work is carried out closely with the Accident & Emergency department at Ninewells to ensure a quick response to all known non-fatal overdoses, with assertive outreach workers contacting those individuals and offering support.

“Joint working with mental health services ensures those affected by drug use can access mental health support. Meanwhile, people in the city now have more access to residential rehab.

“These examples show the breadth and depth of work ongoing in the city. We must carry this momentum forward so Dundee can be a place of hope, healing and opportunity for everyone.”
