Reproduction of Images

Re-use is defined as use of an image for a purpose other than that for which was it was created, or re-publishing it. This includes the use of images in books, leaflets, websites, posters, merchandise, films, etc. Images can be photographs, drawings or copies of documents.

About the Archives

Under the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1994 and the Public Records (Scotland) Act 2011, Dundee City Council is required to make appropriate provision for the storage, preservation and management of records created by the Council and its predecessors, including:

Our Records

Dundee City Archives holds the records of Dundee City Council and its predecessors, including:

  • Dundee District Council
  • Dundee Town Council/Corporation
  • Tayside Regional Council

We also accept records of businesses, societies and families relating to the City of Dundee as gifts or deposits.

Volunteer at the Archives

We rely on volunteers to help us complete projects to make records more accessible to the public.

A number of roles are available to volunteers, including:

  • Indexing records
  • Box Listing
  • Cataloguing
  • Creating Finding Aids
  • Labelling and Packaging Records

Deposit Records

A large proportion of the records we hold have been deposited or donated to the Archives by other organisations or members of the public. We accept collections of documents that relate to Dundee places, businesses and people.

What we will accept

We collect documents. These are generally paper or digital items, and can include books, diaries, letters, accounts, minutes, maps, posters, leaflets, photographs.
