Under the Local Government (Scotland) Act 1994 and the Public Records (Scotland) Act 2011, Dundee City Council is required to make appropriate provision for the storage, preservation and management of records created by the Council and its predecessors, including:
Our Records
Dundee City Archives holds the records of Dundee City Council and its predecessors, including:
- Dundee District Council
- Dundee Town Council/Corporation
- Tayside Regional Council
We also accept records of businesses, societies and families relating to the City of Dundee as gifts or deposits.
Talks and Events
Talks
Members of the Archives staff and some of our volunteers offer short talks on a variety of subjects relating to the history of Dundee.
Talks can be given to Dundee area groups and societies. There is no charge for these talks but we do suggest that groups may wish to make a donation to the Friends of Dundee City Archives.
Volunteer at the Archives

We rely on volunteers to help us complete projects to make records more accessible to the public.
A number of roles are available to volunteers, including:

- Creating Finding Aids
- Labelling and Packaging Records
Projects we have run in the past:
Deposit Records
A large proportion of the records we hold have been deposited or donated to the Archives by other organisations or members of the public. We accept collections of documents that relate to Dundee places, businesses and people.
