Good News Story 1

David joined the Adult Employability Pathway to receive support to find work in the Hospitality or Retail sectors. He had many years previous experience working in hotels and restaurants. This had been at manager level but after 10 months of not working David was happy to secure any job.

David and his case manager identified what may be the reasons for not being successful in finding work and set an action plan to address these deficits.

David:

  1. perceived his age as a barrier ( age 58)
  2. felt he lacked Digital Skills for job search and applications
  3. lacked a good CV & experience creating impactful application forms
  4. had little knowledge of interview techniques

With a plan of attendance set David came to The Shore Base for regular support with these needs. The interventions provided were a combination of 1:1 and group participation activities. STEPS to EMPLOYMENT sessions gave David an opportunity to create a CV, practise filling in application forms, improve his digital skills( during twice weekly jobshop) and experience mock interviews. All this was underpinned with an emphasis on building confidence, encouraging motivation and developing an understanding of growth mindset and how this can benefit individual success.

It was explained to David that part of our service is to job match our clients with current LLM vacancies that appear through our Employer engagement team. The first vacancy David’s CV was submitted for resulted in an interview. This was unsuccessful but gave him great experience and encouragement, creating a feeling he was on a progressive path and optimistic he would get a job.

The next vacancy David was submitted for was Front of House at a local hotel and leisure complex. He was offered a trial shift and immediately impressed both the Employer and customers. He started the following week as a permanent Employee. He is delighted and feels the support from the Pathway was crucial to his success.

6 weeks in and David continues to receive in work support and contact from his case manager to ensure everything runs smoothly in his transition into work.
