A new plan aimed at providing help and support to people in Dundee who have thoughts of taking their own life or are affected by suicide in other ways has been launched.

Creating Hope Together in Dundee sets out how the city can become a place where every child, young person or adult, can get the help they need and feel a sense of hope.

The multi-agency plan outlines the overarching local suicide prevention aims for the city for the next three years.

It includes a series of actions to create communities, services and workplaces that are safe, compassionate, inclusive, and free of stigma and where everyone understands their role in helping to prevent suicide.

Elaine Torrance, Independent Chair of the Dundee Adults and Children at Risk Committees said: “Every life lost to suicide is a tragedy that has a wide-reaching impact on families, friends and wider communities.

“Although we will never be able to accurately quantify the number of lives saved, this new plan represents a significant step forward in our commitment to preventing suicide in Dundee.

“Through promoting collaboration, equality and fairness and providing continuous learning and development for all, we will ensure that high quality support is available for people from across the city who are feeling suicidal or who have been affected by it.”

The most recent statistics, from 2023, for probable deaths by suicide in Scotland showed a total of 792, an increase of 30 on the previous year. Over the same period in Dundee, 30 people died by probable suicide, up one on 2022.

Suicide rates for men are three times as high as women, and rates are over three times higher in the most deprived compared with least deprived areas.
