Thousands of people are expected to line the Kingsway as Dundee and the surrounding area pays its respects to Her Majesty The Queen tomorrow (Sunday).

And mourners wishing to take part were today advised to plan ahead, taking account of the weather conditions, limited facilities and the likelihood of spending many hours at the roadside.

Civic dignitaries from across Tayside and Fife are due to pay their respects from a dais shortly after 2.15pm, just prior to the cortege leaving the city at the Swallow roundabout.

However, safe viewing points will be available at various locations along the route from Powrie Brae, where the cortege is due to arrive in the city around 2pm.

A council spokesperson said: “This is an event of unprecedented scale in Dundee. Plans are being put in place to give the public the chance to safely pay their respects.”

Significant numbers of stewards are being drafted in, alongside police officers, to help keep the public safe. The stewards will provide advice on routes from car parks, identified crossing points and safe viewing areas.

Stewards will also be able to summon First Aiders should anyone feel unwell at the roadside.

Members of the public are being advised that there will not be any mobile catering or toilet facilities on the route.

The spokesperson said: “We expect people to start arriving early and be at the roadside throughout the day.

“It’s essential that people bring with them everything they need for the day, including plenty of food and drinks, appropriate clothing and any medication.

“Local facilities such as supermarkets will be available, but are likely to be much busier than usual.”

The speed limit on the Kingsway will be reduced to 40mph for its whole length throughout the day in the interests of public safety.

The spokesperson added: “This will still be a very fast-moving and busy stretch of road, so people should be aware of their safety and follow the instructions of the stewards and police at all times.

“We would urge people not to stand in unsafe areas and to keep off the carriageway at all times.”
