Depositing School Related Records

Most of our school records come from the school themselves. We also hold collections of records deposited by former pupils and staff at Dundee Schools.

What sort of records will you take?

You can deposit items such as school magazines, prospectuses, year books, information leaflets, events programmes and posters. We will only accept items we don’t already hold a copy of. Please see our catalogues for more information or get in touch to check.

We will also take class photographs and staff group photographs. These are the professionally taken photographs in school. We will also take photographs or videos of school trips, visits, parties, prize-givings and similar events.

We may also take small objects, such as school ties, medals and badges.

If you are not sure, please contact us.

What will you not take?

Work jotters, textbooks (unless Dundee specific), generic trophies, artworks, blazers and school uniform items (except ties and badges).

Some of these items may be accepted by the McManus Art Galleries and Museum, so you may wish to offer items like this to them.

We will not take individual photographs of pupils.

If you are not sure, please contact us.

How do I deposit items at the archives?

You will need to contact us to make an appointment. Find out more about depositing records.

What will happen to my records after I deposit them?

When you deposit records will give them an accession number and a collection reference. As the records have not come from the school they will be kept separate from the main school collection. However, we will add a reference to your deposit in the school catalogue.

Can I deposit more than school records?

Absolutely, we will take other records relating to life in Dundee. Please email us to let us know what you have to give to the archives and we will let you know if it is something we would take.
