From Forced Labour to Liberation: The secret diary of Captain Clarkson Blackater, Japanese Prisoner of War 1942 -1945.

Glasgow born Captain Clarkson Blackater was captured by the Imperial Japanese Army at the fall of Singapore in February 1942 and sent to work on the notorious Thailand to Burma Railway. The secret diary he kept throughout his imprisonment became the basis of his book Gods Without Reaso . 80 years on from his liberation, his grandson, Piers Bowser, uses extracts from his grandfather's book, along with private letters and poems to reveal the extent to which his grandfather's love for his family, his homeland and his faith sustained him through the dark days of his captivity.

This portrait of Captain Blackater was painted by his fellow prisoner, George Old, in Chungkai Prisoner of War Camp in 1944.
